SPFF's Education Program

SPFF offers several programs and classes to assist one in learning the basics of fly fishing and the enhancement of skills to make the activity more enjoyable. These include both classroom and on-the-water instruction. The links below take you to the calendar of events for the details. Here are the major events for 2017. Keep an eye on the newsletter for updates.

Introduction to Fly FIshing (ITFF)
This program consists of three in-class mornings which offer instruction in knot tying, casting, and fly fishing skills; an on-the-water day on the Los Angeles River to provide the feel of real water on your line, and the graduation outing in the town of Bishop in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. The graduation outing provides time with skilled guides to "get the feel" of the sport and to make friends with folks like yourself who are interested in the skills. Fly Tying
Tying your own flies can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, but it requires some new skills and knowledges to make successful flies. This program meets for seven weeks and the cost of $75 includes an instruction book and a wealth of tying materials. The class is limited to 10 students.  Fly Tying Class - 1/11/2017

Rod Building
Similarly to tying your own flies, building your own rod and then catching something with it (and a fly you tied yourself) is one of the great pleasures of this sport. This program offers all the materials and skill needed to prepare, wrap, and finish a usable fly rod. This class was cancelled for this year.

Nymphing Clinic
This outing centers on the skills needed to successfully fish sub-surface using flies representing nymphs as bait. The insects consumed by trout take several stages in life form development. The weekend includes instruction by experienced guides in rigging your line and flies for this type of fishing. Not Yet Scheduled.
