Big Springs is located about 7 miles north of Mammoth Lakes. It runs down a canyon called Alpers Canyon, and there is a slight elevation change. It is a beautiful spring fed small stream that is open in places, has nice pools, and during the summer months is mainly dry fly fishing. Hip waders or full chest high waders will definately help you get a better approach on many of the pools.
Pack a lunch or bring snacks if you wish. Don't forget fishing license, sunblock, and a hat for protection. Also bring a camera if you wish, it's a stream that offers great scenery. Any further questions, you can contact Steve Ebersold.

Leave from the Breakfast Club at 08:30 and go to the public section of Hot Creek.

Meet at 6:30 a.m. in parking lot adjacent to Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge at the top of Minaret Road. My car is the green Subaru Outback. In order to keep traffic down and save on entrance fees to the Monument, we can figure out carpooling there. We’ll leave the Main Lodge no later than 6:45 a.m. to caravan in to the Monument. We must get through the entrance station before 7:00 a.m. (private cars are not allowed in after 7:00 a.m. unless you have an inflated float tube for each person in the vehicle, have a valid disability placard or are camping in the Monument—if you want to use the float tube ploy to drive in after 7:00 a.m., they’re going to ask you where you are heading so say “Sotcher” or “Starkweather”).

I’ll scout the day before and figure out the best spots to start.

Basic attractor patterns are all I’ve ever needed down here. Stimulators, parachute adams, elk hair caddis, are all fine. I’ve also had good success with harrowing style mergers, sparkle duns and comparaduns. For deeper runs and pools any basic nymphs work well on a dry-dropper combo: beadhead prince, PTs, GRHEs. Sizes 14-18 should be fine. This is great tenkara water.

In the past we have all met at the Reds Meadows cafe for breakfast after entering the monument. Last time, however, the wait was so long that we gave up. So I’m skipping the breakfast meet up this year. However, if the general consensus is that people want to grab breakfast after we drive in I’m happy to try.

We can reconvene at lunch and figure out our next move. In the past some of us have usually gone up to Tuolumne Meadows in the afternoon to fish the Lyell or Dana Forks. However, this year they are continuing the COVID-19 restrictions put in place last year and requiring advance ticketed reservations. I have one and may be able to take 1-2 more people in my car. There are other creeks to check out, including Lee Vining, Big Springs, Rush, Rock Creek etc.

Join “guide” David Hoffberg for a “Day on Saddlebag Creek between Tioga highway and Saddlebag Lake" just outside of Yosemite National Park. This outing is limited to 3 students.
We'll leave Mammoth Lakes from the Breakfast Club at 8:30 AM, and venture up Highway 395, and historic Tioga Pass Road. This is a high altitude, full day adventure and ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE IN GOOD HEALTH.

This is small creek fishing for small Rainbow, Brown, Brooke, and Golden Trout. Light tackle is all that's needed for these hungry fishes.
Plan to wet wade, with easy-dry (no denim), light weight clothing. Waist High Waders or Hip Boots are fine if you don't want to get wet. Sun block, and a wide brim hat are highly recommended.

Everyone will carry their own snacks, lunch, water, and fishing tackle. A day pack should do the trick. Water purification system / tablets, is also suggested as it’s unsafe to drink the river water. If the forecast calls for rain / thunder storms, everyone will need rain gear.
We'll break for a creek side lunch after a couple of hours of fishing. Then fish as long as the group wants to, before heading back to Mammoth Lakes. If we're running late, we'll stop for dinner on the way back to Mammoth.

I will do a day trip to the "upper" Dana Fork, upstream from where we usually fish. Group is limited to 3 people maximum, as these are all small creeks. Full day of fishing with day pack w/water, food, etc.

Interpretive Site to the Upper Owens
We will check out Hot Creek and Upper Owens access points and will fish where we find good (or merely adequate)conditions. First stop will be the Interpretive Site on Hot Creek where it is likely we will fish. We will then visit the three parking areas in the canyon section of Hot Creek and may fish. Then we will caravan over the back way to the Benton Crossing Road bridge. The final stop will be the the Upper O.

Bring a copy of the DFW Freshwater Fishing Regulations. We will make some sense of the special regs on the Upper Owens.

Equipment:
3 to 5 weight floating line.
4X or 5X 9' leader(s) and spool of 5X (and optionally 6X tippet.
Flies: it doesn't hurt to check with the fly shops. Don't break the bank.
Dry flies: Caddis size 16 to 20, Mayfly duns and emergers (Adams)in sizes 16 to 20.
Nymphs: Caddis larva, Mayfly nymphs, Midge pupa

Waders not required. We won't wade in Hot Creek. Wading may be somewhat helpful on the Upper O. Recommend wet wading.

Meet at the Hot Creek Interpretive Center near the Airport at 8:00 AM. Bring a lunch.

GSO BACKPACK TRIP
We have a permit for the John Muir Trail along Lyell Creek starting at Tuolumne Meadow ranger station.
Elevation is 9000 feet plus and good physical fitness is required.

Plan is to leave the Breakfast Club at 07:30 and drive to Tuolumne Meadows. Plan to hike in about 5 miles along Lyell Creek to the junction of Ireland Creek, We will make camp there and fish Lyell Creek on Thursday, Friday and hike out Saturday in order to be back for the Saturday night barbecue.
Permit is for 6 persons maximum.
Must be in reasonable shape for hiking at altitude and comfortable with backpacking.
Pack light!! Fishing gear recommended is 2 wt or 3 wt rod/reel or Tenkara. Fish are generally small and stream is not large. Wet wading, so do not need waders. There will be some sort of pre-trip meeting to finalize details. Permit fee of $35.00 will be split amongst the group.

Absolutely no food can be left in any parked vehicle!! There are bear boxes at the parking lot to store extra food items or empty bottles.

The Annual End-of-GSO-BBQ dinner will again be served at The Breakfast Club which is located next door to the Trout Fitter and the Shell gas station at the intersection of Hwy 203 and Old Mammoth Road at the first signal intersection as you enter the town of Mammoth. The Breakfast Club is a favorite of SPFF’rs and is owned by Steve Ebersold’s sister, Sue. The dinner will commence at 6:30 PM giving you ample time to fish the early evening hatch.

The cost of the dinner will be $30.00 and $15 for youngsters under age 12. Payment is required at the time of registration.

We will have the entire Breakfast Club to ourselves. The dinner will be a sit down buffet with BBQ chicken, ribs, potato and fruit salads, beverages, etc. There will be a no-host bar for beer and wine.
