Join Bill Woods and others at the Santa Barbara County Beach at Bates Road for a Surf on the Fly Clinic or just come to fish if you already know what you're doing.  

 

Beginners:  Check out the introduction to Fly Fishing the Surf page under the "Outings" header on the main menu. It discusses gear and tactics. Bill will meet students at the picnic tables at the County Park at 7:30 AM to go over the basics and then coach beginners on the beach.  We will catch the mid to hi tide during the morning's fishing.  Not the optimum, but the best conditions available on a Saturday in January this year.  READ THE INTRODUCTION TO FLY FISHING THE SURF.  Come PREPARED with: 1) a 2017 CA Fishing License with Ocean Enhancement Stamp; 2) Chest Hi waders and overlapping rain top; 3) 6Wt to 8Wt Fly rod with full sink line and spool of 2X tippet for leader; 4)  a few size 6 or 8 surf flies; and very important 5) a casting basket.  You don't need an expensive casting basket to get started. A cheap plastic storage bin around 12x12 inches and 6 to 8 inches deep secured to your waist by a length of bungee cord will get you started. Read the Introduction!!!

 

Experienced surf fly fishers are welcome to take part in the clinic or just go fishing.  When you've located a pocket of fish, please share with a beginner.
