Calendar - Event View

Once again, the club has reserved a group campsite in the Mammoth area for the weekend of the Getting Started Outing. We have the site for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (checkout is noon Sunday) and it can hold up to 30 people. Average cost per person in the past years have been around $30.00 for the three nights and that includes unlimited firewood. It is a great way to keep your expenses down and meet other members of the club. There are even cheap showers across the road at the RV park! The clinic will take place on Friday, July 19, 2019. Current plan is for everyone to meet at 08:00 AM at the Troutfitter parking lot in Mammoth Lakes. Initial instructions and assistance with set up and equipment will be given. Additional details will be added to this site as they become available. Please register for this event if you are interested and the details will be worked out soon.

Pat is a licensed fly fishing guide for the Eastern Sierra and has spoken at various SPFF events as well as at the Fishermen's Spot annual Expo. He will be conducting a clinic on Tenkara Fishing for the Eastern Sierra. A fee of $65.00 each will be charged.

Big Springs is located about 7 miles north of Mammoth Lakes. It runs down a canyon called Alpers Canyon, and there is a slight elevation change. It is a beautiful spring fed small stream that is open in places, has nice pools, and during the summer months is mainly dry fly fishing. Hip waders or full chest high waders will definately help you get a better approach on many of the pools.
Pack a lunch or bring snacks if you wish. Don't forget fishing license, sunblock, and a hat for protection. Also bring a camera if you wish, it's a stream that offers great scenery. Any further questions, you can contact Steve Ebersold.

FLOAT TUBE OUTING

I will do a day trip to the "upper" Dana Fork, upstream from where we usually fish. Group is limited to 3 people maximum, as these are all small creeks. Full day of fishing with day pack w/water, food, etc.

Depart from the Breakfast Club parking lot at 8:30 AM. This is a small stream with easy access via Benton Crossing Road just off US 395. Great for newbies working on their stream fishing skills.
Equipment:
3 to 5 weight with floating line.
4X or 5X 9' leader(s) and spool of 5X and optionally 6X tippet.
Flies: Standard assortment of trout flies will work. Check the fly shop's
fishing reports for their recommendations.
Bring lunch/snacks and plenty of water.
Waders are not required but may be helpful if you want to cross the stream

Leave from the Breakfast Club at 08:30 and go to the public section of Hot Creek.

NOTE: Outing may have to be changed depending on road conditions into Devil’s Postpile. Due to the amount of snow Mammoth received this year and the unknown road conditions as a result, it is uncertain when the road will open. I will continue to monitor and provide updates. Details:Meet at 6:30 a.m. in parking lot adjacent to Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge at the top of Minaret Road. My car is the green Subaru Outback. In order to keep traffic down and save on entrance fees to the Monument, we can figure out carpooling there. We’ll leave the Main Lodge no later than 6:45 a.m. to caravan in to the Monument. We must get through the entrance station before 7:00 a.m. (private cars are not allowed in after 7:00 a.m. unless you have an inflated float tube for each person in the vehicle, have a valid Handicapped permit or are camping in the Monument).

We’ll head to Reds Meadows Resort to grab breakfast then head for the water. I’ll scout the day before and figure on the best spot. Anyone unable to make it to the 6:30 meet up at the Main Lodge can meet us at Reds Meadows Resort (but you have to drive in before 7:00).

Basic attractor patterns are all I’ve ever needed down here. I’ve fished all day with nothing more than parachute adams, elk hair caddis, and a beadhead prince or PT (though there is always plenty of surface action). Hairwing style emergers are always deadly. Sizes 16-18. I will be fishing a tenkara rod so if you have one bring it along!

We can reconvene at lunch and figure out our next move. I may head up to Tioga pass in the afternoon and fish until early evening, probably Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne. Anyone who wants to is welcome to join me.

Upper Lee Vining Creek flows from Saddlebag Lake to Ellery Lake near the summit of Tioga Pass just outside Yosemite National Park. Our destination is the meadow section along Saddlebag Lake Road about one mile upstream from Tioga Pass Road.
This is a small stream with easy access, minimal brush and no trees to snag your backcast. The stream is well populated with wild Brook and Brown trout and the occasional stocked Rainbows that swim up from Ellery Lake. Fish are on the small side so lightweight tackle will increase your fun factor, but your 5 wt will work just fine. Waders are not required. You can wet wade or consider hippers or waist highs if you want to keep your feet dry.
This is a high elevation outing (9,700 ft at the meadow). Appropriate sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)and plenty of water to stay hydrated are important. Insect repellant is a must. It’s been a normal snow year in this area so mosquitos may be abundant. Raingear will also be handy in the event of a summer thundershower. Bring snacks or lunch if you want to stay the day.

Interpretive Site to the Monument!!!
We will check out Hot Creek and Upper Owens access points and will fish where we find good (or merely adequate)conditions. First stop will be the Interpretive Site on Hot Creek where it is likely we will fish. We will then visit the three parking areas in the canyon section of Hot Creek and may fish. Then we will caravan over the back way to the Benton Crossing Road bridge. The final stop will be the MONUMENT on the Upper O.

Bring a copy of the DFW Freshwater Fishing Regulations. We will make some sense of the special regs on the Upper Owens.

Equipment:
3 to 5 weight floating line.
4X or 5X 9' leader(s) and spool of 5X (and optionally 6X tippet.
Flies: it doesn't hurt to check with the fly shops. Don't break the bank.
Dry flies: Caddis size 16 to 20, Mayfly duns and emergers (Adams)in sizes 16 to 20.
Nymphs: Caddis larva, Mayfly nymphs, Midge pupa

Waders not required. We won't wade in Hot Creek. Wading may be somewhat helpful on the Upper O.

Meet at the entrance to Crowley Lake marina at 6 am Saturday morning. We’ll go to little Hilton bay and float tube or I may even bring a small duck boat. I have two float tubes I can offer and 1 Pontoon boat if anyone needs something to float on. Or they can rent a float tube at the trout fitter. I will email the preferred rig to whomever signs up.
Float tubes and fins can be rented at the Trout Fitter in Mammoth.

The Annual End-of-GSO-BBQ dinner will again be served at The Breakfast Club which is located next door to the Trout Fitter and the Shell gas station at the intersection of Hwy 203 and Old Mammoth Road at the first signal intersection as you enter the town of Mammoth. The Breakfast Club is a favorite of SPFF’rs and is owned by Steve Ebersold’s sister, Sue. The dinner will commence at 6:30 PM giving you ample time to fish the early evening hatch.

The cost of the dinner will be $30.00 and $15 for youngsters under age 12. Payment is required at the time of registration.

We will have the entire Breakfast Club to ourselves. The dinner will be a sit down buffet with BBQ chicken, ribs, potato and fruit salads, beverages, etc. There will be a no-host bar for beer and wine.
