Once again, the club has reserved a group campsite in the Mammoth area for the weekend of the Getting Started Outing. We have the site for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (checkout is noon Sunday) and it can hold up to 30 people. Average cost per person in the past years have been around $30.00 for the three nights and that includes unlimited firewood. It is a great way to keep your expenses down and meet other members of the club. There are even cheap showers across the road at the RV park! Spend a morning with special guest Robert Younghanz (The Bug Guy), a professional guide and fishing entomology expert. There will be a didactic session first thing in the morning and then go in pairs to the river of his choice to collect, save, identify and learn about the various insects and their precursors (ie.nymphs) to help in fly selection.
There is a fee of $35.00 for the class which includes a seine net, collection vials and additional equipment. Payment to be made at the time of registration. Meet at the Recreation Room at 1849 Condos (826 Lakeview Blvd., Mammoth Lakes at 8:30AM for the didactic session and then go to a stream (TBD) for the rest of the morning. NOTE: must register for either Friday or Saturday, but not both classes.

Big Springs is located about 7 miles north of Mammoth Lakes. It runs down a canyon called Alpers Canyon, and there is a slight elevation change. It is a beautiful spring fed small stream that is open in places, has nice pools, and during the summer months is mainly dry fly fishing. Hip waders or full chest high waders will definately help you get a better approach on many of the pools.
Pack a lunch or bring snacks if you wish. Don't forget fishing license, sunblock, and a hat for protection. Also bring a camera if you wish, it's a stream that offers great scenery. Any further questions, you can contact Steve Ebersold.

I will do a day trip to the Dana Fork in Yosemite Park. Group is limited to 3 people maximum, as these are all small creeks. Full day of fishing with day pack w/water, food, etc. Be aware that at least one person in the vehicle has to have a Peak Hour ($2.00) reservation to get past the entry gate. Meet at the Breakfast Club and 8:00AM and plan on leaving at 8:30AM. NOTE: must register for either Friday or Saturday, but not both classes.

Meet at 6:30 a.m. in parking lot adjacent to Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge at the top of Minaret Road. My car is the green Subaru Outback. To keep traffic down and save on entrance fees to the Devil’s Postpile National Monument, we can figure out carpooling there. We’ll leave the Main Lodge no later than 6:45 a.m. to caravan into the Monument. We must get through the entrance station before 7:00 a.m. (private cars are not allowed in after 7:00 a.m. unless you have an inflated float tube, a valid handicapped tag or are camping in the Monument).

Depending on what people want we can head to Reds Meadows Resort to grab breakfast then head for the water, or we can start fishing.

We can reconvene at lunch and figure out our next move. I usually head up Tioga Pass to Lee Vining Creek or Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite. I have a ticketed entry reservation for Yosemite but can only take a couple people in my car. If you’re interested you might try to get a Yosemite reservation. My understanding is that they hold back some reservation spots until the week before so you may be able to get one. Or we can explore other small creeks in the area.

NOTE: The ongoing drought may impact this trip. Last year the San Joaquin was low but fishable for the GSO, as were Lee Vining and Tuolumne Meadows. But if they’re too low we may need to regroup. I’ll try to go down the day before.

Basic attractor patterns are all I’ve ever needed down here. I’ve fished all day with nothing more than parachute adams, elk hair caddis, and a beadhead prince or PT (though there is always plenty of surface action). Hairwing style emergers are always deadly. DESCRIPTION:
Spend the day fishing beautiful Lyell Creek in Yosemite Park. Involves about .7 mile of walking with very little elevation gain if any. It's an absolutely beautiful area!

No need for waders. Wet wading will be best with warm weather accessible water.

CARPOOLS
As of Weds - Mike Bowden and I can both drive members in - AND we both have the 3 day passes into the park. I can take for 3 persons/riders in total w/big bins for gear in my 3500 Dodge Ram Truck. Mike can easily take 2 persons. Gear can go in the bed of my truck -- Just chip in for fuel.

NEW/Edited: After we figure out carpools we might have to swing back to the campground area to drop off cars. I don’t think the BC will want us leaving cars there all day.

NEW/Edited: Due to forecasted road work/weekend traffic, we want to leave as soon as we can – so for those who need to get breakfast – see if the BC can make you a breakfast burrito or an eggs on a muffin to go to eat on the road.
If anyone needs flies or supplies, the Troutfitter is next door.

The Annual End-of-GSO-BBQ dinner will again be served at The Breakfast Club which is located next door to the Trout Fitter and the Shell gas station at the intersection of Hwy 203 and Old Mammoth Road at the first signal intersection as you enter the town of Mammoth. The Breakfast Club is a favorite of SPFF’rs and is owned by Steve Ebersold’s sister, Sue. The dinner will commence at 6:30 PM giving you ample time to fish the early evening hatch.

The cost of the dinner will be $35.00 and $15 for youngsters age 12 and under. Payment is required at the time of registration.

We will have the entire Breakfast Club to ourselves. The dinner will be a sit down buffet with BBQ chicken, ribs, potato and fruit salads, beverages, etc. There will be a no-host bar for beer and wine.
